Sunday work update and pics

Jeremy and I worked this morning. It was only us, so we did not get everything done. We did complete the RG, which involved lots of large fill, bigger boulders and earth from Hump. We spent nearly 3 hours on it, including the entry/exit tread and trannies, plus the small jump/roller on the alternate line. Rawk Garten - it's still challenging, but definitely more doable, it was ridden by many with and without success. The small jump was hit and held up well.

In addition to that I cut the beginning of the tread/corridor to the south of RG (above it) that leads to the last bit of tech before the DT. I cut only a few feet in, but flagged the rest. The bit closest to the DT I stacked rocks in lieu of a flag. This last ridge piece is just a short little bit but it's a nice piece.

By the time I left at 12:15 I saw 19 riders. The first couple riders that showed up this morning texted me their info to offer help. Later a couple of bored housewives tried to take Jeremy and I into the woods to express their appreciation (true-ish story)- us being married, we declined. A group of 7-8 from the 512 MTB Facebook group rode it. They expressed much appreciation. The last guys of the day were older guys - 50s, on big travel bikes and loved the whole thing, guy came up and said, "Thanks, I have to shake your hand."

I found that telephone pole I remembered seeing, it's just to the left of the trail entry into the ridge above RG. I figure we can cut it into 2' sections and use it for roller/jump fill or evening use it to help create a bridge in Gnarl's Barkley.

Tools are all on the new side of RG now.

Looking from DT - subtle line of rocks on the left side are the flag.

This is the existing beaten path of the west side of DT.

  2. Very nice work guys! I'll be out tomorrow, and I'll try to cut and tread the remaining portion that is "rock flagged"....but maybe that's not realistic depending on how much there is to do.

I agree that we might want to keep that area from being a session area. With the most recent negative attention that one douchebag...I mean guy gave me while I was out there (albeit just the one guy), I think we should just kind of stick to some measure of covertness.

Anyways, I'll be out there from about 10am-12pm or so.

  3. We also cleared out all of the cuttings from the area visible from DT yesterday. I recommend hiding the cut branches for this segment.

I agree with covertness..hiding the trail head on the other side as Eric mentioned for starters.

  4. Mike, it's about an hours worth of cutting and treading. Treading is more about rock moving/placement than traditional treading. Above the step it flat rock, below it's boulders. It steps up once, then down and that's it.

I may or may not head out to wrap up whatever might be left. If I get out there I'll wrap up whatever Mike leaves and do some maintenance.

I suggest we leave the tool stash where it is today instead of getting it to the new trail head. We need to evaluate maintenance to be done on the existing older sections. We need to address the maintenance before we progress to building new stuff.

I haven't been there for a while, but I supposed that Ravine Drop and The Hollows need some bench/crib attn - probably the most pressing of the maintenance.

Tuesday I think it will be worth while to grab pink ribbon and walk the as much as I (we) can - flagging areas that need cutting back - pencil cactus, cactus, new growth (potential growth), bench, etc.

Please let me know if you can make it today or tomorrow - I will make sure to join you.
