Thought I'd just post up my favorite segment with some pics to help people see the features with their names. Maybe it can orient a few people.
My favorite segment as the trail currently stands begins at Jammer (right before Satellite)
Goes into the Hollows (name for all of the rest of it up to EBD (tallest gnarl we have so far in terms of tech - pic to come) I'd say, then it's the fencelines).
The Knee is down low close to the hike n bike around that bridge at the top of a hill..Coming out of The Bonus (name for a larger subsection not technically in The Hollows) - Leaving the Bonus in this shot and re-entering The Hollows
Then there is Cum Drop of course....right side is cribbed to form a tread
Then it goes for a bit and through the mini vortex...(the swooshy thing down by the hike n bike before the steep climb and feature at the top (EBD - Eric is a Bag of Dicks), then it's The Chunk (pic following) and the feature is The Swashbuckler
Then Dare at the end of The Chunk. The end of this line has two routes....one called Truth and one called Dare...Dare is typically marked by a couple of rocks stacked on each side of the line off the rock. It's somewhat blind and the rock transition is off camber. It can pop you if you aren't paying attention.
Then through the Big Cedar turn with the biggest and best berm we have made thus far. Thanks to whomever helped build that by hauling in water or tamping it or whatever....LOVE that turn.
One bonus pic I forgot about....the piece (I call it Washout but I don't think it's named) just before first time you come out to the open area near the path to the hike n bike (Double Track - DT), also has the skills feature Rawk Garten and a jump beside it.
After this you are entering upperfenceline (UFL). Then Lower Fenceline (LFL) and out over Rawk Garten and finish.
Deception is a 100% rider designed and built trail. The trail is in the process of becoming an official trail of the Williamson County Parks and Rec and is an Austin Ridge Rider supported trail. The designers and builders will continue to be the primary trail stewards and are official volunteers for Wilco and Trail Stewards for ARR. Deception is NOT Walnut Creek and it's not meant to be EASY - do not modify the trail, elevate YOUR skills.

I like it! I think we should find some iconic symbol like a gumby doll or similar and place him at every spot on trail snap a pic and make an indexed page that can be address to or something. I mean the water bottle is cool and all but who doesn't love gumby.
ReplyDelete*added , not address
ReplyDeleteThank you for the pictorial glossary. Definitely helps to be able to recognize reference points. Appreciate it
ReplyDeleteHey guys, awesome trail! I think I have met most of you on the trail and at least had a short chat once or twice, but I wanted to thank you again on here for all the hard work.
ReplyDeleteI have read some of this blog and see you guys talking about trail feature names, and while this picture thread helps with some of it, it doesn't cover all of it. So is there a marked-up map somewhere? If not, maybe I can help make one, or put up some kind of markers on the trail itself.
Speaking of markers, this trail is so tight and up and down that you get a noticeable difference between GPS and bike computer mileage. Would anyone object to me putting up some subtle mile markers such as mailbox numbers stuck to rocks or tree trunks? Also, I seriously dig riding this trail at night, and one awesome feature of RHR for night riding is little bits of reflective tape stuck on rocks and trees in places to give preview of curves and that kind of thing. If I were to add this, would you guys object?
Thanks again guys! My new favorite trail to ride and just 2 miles from my driveway!
Welcome Josh. Glad you are enjoying the trail. I'd need a refresher with context to know if we've met - we meet so many ppl out there.
DeleteIf the main Deception trail is all you have ridden you are in for a treat when you find Mulligan (work in progress, but probably done this week), Picnic and Barn. Read thru the more recent posts and you'll figure out where these are and how they flow.
As for signage and reflectors, frankly I am not a fan of putting any unnatural markings out there like reflective numbers, arrows, tape, etc. I am all for signs warning of the BIG drop on Picnic and perhaps a heads up that once you hit the Ravine Drop on Deception the trail is no longer an beginner trail, maybe a sign at Lloyd Bridges warning of the narrow bridge, but those signs will be natural looking or at least have natural colors and no reflective material. I'll take some of that back - the warning signs for Ravine Drop and Basket might be the only ones with unnatural - very obvious signage for safety reasons, I don't think the turns and drops we have (other than those) warrant any warnings.
I'm glad it's close for you and that you enjoy it and hope you keep riding, I don't mean to sound like a killjoy.
Eric, I think we chatted at the top of EBD about 1.5 weeks ago, talked about which tires are holding up on this trail and you told me about the Picnic trail (which I have since ridden, along with the Barn section, last Saturday).
DeleteFWIW this morning the route I rode (out and back from the west end DT to the big rock bridge ~1mi from the barn and back) had over 2 miles of difference between GPS distance and my rolling computer distance. Don't trust the GPS mileage, it's not close. It's short by up to 20%.
No killjoy here. I'll just go ride :) Can't wait to check out Mulligan, maybe Saturday.
Yea, Josh, I remember you perfectly. In fact, I checked out the Pisgah online - probably try them next.
ReplyDeleteI have generally expected a 10-20% error (short) with GPS, especially with a phone GPS. What mileage are you getting on your cyclometer?
Yea, Mike is planning on working Mulligan today, I might get out there today too and also tomorrow. It should definitely be done by Sunday, as I'll put in a few hours Sunday morning if we're still not done.
I'll likely be on a plane for UK on Sunday but I may see what state it's in on Saturday.
DeleteAnd BTW the Geax AKA rolls real fast and sealed up super well, but the knobs are already getting shredded after just two rides! I think I'll put a Pigsah on both ends. My math says I'll be doing about 200+ miles/month on this trail and I can't handle a tire that is shot after <100 miles.
From the old trail head (before the barn) to the exit at the DT I am getting 6.12 miles on my computer. That looks like about 5 miles on the phone GPS. I haven't tried it with the eTrax. Route through Picnic varies so I am not sure my mileage there makes much difference.
I didn't want to burst your bubble on the Geax tires, I gave up on them in 2000 and never looked back. That was long ago and some ppl like them. For nostalgia I've thought about trying my old favorites - Panaracer Smoke and Dart.
DeletePretty sure Picnic is a tad under 1 mile and Deception is likely ~6.25...maybe even 6.5. I'm guessing Barn is a 1/4 mile. Mulligan might be 3/4-1 mile - amazing considering the acreage.
I took a pic of my computer Sat, 13.31 miles round trip going all the way from the DT through Barn & Picnic and back to the DT. out & back through deception & barn and one lap through picnic.
ReplyDeleteThat's a legit ride. In fact, I think I'll do that tomorrow :)
going to check it out today.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy, be safe and report back your thoughts.
DeleteA few of us will be riding tonight around 9.
I am about to leave work (3pm) to go cut on Mulligan.
