Picnic is 100% complete - Thanks to ALL that made it possible

It's already getting some visits...these are from a facebook group...

"Its a blast. Thanks guys for all your hard work out there!!"

"As stated by Eric some of the trails are not worn in but marked well by Eric. There are a few walker trails to not follow. Anxious to see if someone actually rides the wall. The creek sounds make for a tranquil ride. Trail head is close to skatepark parking lot."

Trail kuddos in general...from the 512MTB Group

" Eric, that BC trail is a gem! Very well designed and great tech with a fair number of climbs and a few good switchbacks! You even designed in a couple alternate bypasses where needed; good choice! Reminded me of portions of several trails around town. Since it is so close to me by car this can be an "after dinner ride" at about 7 miles in length. I certainly want to do Picnic and Mulligan. Also, I would be willing to help you do some trail work if you need."

"I rode BCT for the first time last week and want to thank the trail builders. You all really did an awesome job, putting a trail that long into such a small space. Even better you put it just a couple miles from my house. :)"

"Rode the trail this morning. Nice stuff! lots of trail compacted into a relatively small area. Lots of short ups and downs, def a good workout. Thanks for the work, Eric Bagadabs!"

Next up - I plan on working on a short bit that will lead in from the highest trail up at the cul de sac and go down through the old farm - trail will be called Barn and it will lead directly to Picnic. That will be a super easy piece before we start Mulligan.

I'll be out to ride and flag Barn on Tuesday. Let me know if you want to join me and we can firm up a time to meet on Dodge Cattle Drive cul de sac.

Flow will be Mulligan, the BCRT hook up with the existing trail just after the composite bridge, Barn, Picnic, then hit the existing trail up to Deception.

    1. I might see you, I'm hoping to be there around 5. I plan to do several laps on Picnic before hitting Deception. I'll probably flag Barn first though.

  5. Blowing this pop stand NOW. Weather is too nice to keep sitting here just looking out the window...

I'll be at the cul de sac by 4:30 and flagging Barn, then riding.

Jesse, if you care to hook up (not like that) text or call 512 5six5-ate0atejuan

  7. Hahaha "(not like that)"....Eric Bagadabs...lol.

FORCED a ride tonight. Honestly didn't really want to, but it's my last night ride of the week for sure, maybe last real ride. Anyways, I hit the picnic to experience the "fullness"...I had to have basket 2 times on the first loop, blasted through the turn after big drop..was trying to not skid but it leaves too much speed to manage (for me) at the bottom...I agree with making that a rideable wall/berm Jizzosh. I'll look at it Thursday as well if you don't F with it first. Are there going to be tools at Barn?

Hit Picnic 2 times total, then onto Deception...I was feeling really good so I was pulling taller gears than I ever have out there...kinda Strava'ing without running the app. Did up to ravine drop just fine, trackstand on Jammer...bitch ass feature. Love it.

As I'm approaching EBD I'm literally repeating outloud, "Fuck you!" really spitefully directed at Eric of course. I ride up to it, pop my load on the face of the feature and ease up holding speed. Let out another poignant "fuck you" and got through Recovery Ridge, popped down the step down by Rawk Garten, hit the berm....then I headed into Upper Fenceline by jumping into the first dip humping it hard, carrying a ton of speed up through it and through the trees, then I am going to RAIL the right hand berm I call "Working Man"....I go to dive to the right HARD and don't get any edge from my front tire...so it was like I literally threw myself down on my right shoulder at the top of that piece and slammed down, then slid down into the berm on my face, right shoulder, and right knee. It hurt pretty damn bad.

I go to continue on after sitting there for about 10 minutes. I decide I'm going to beast out the rest. Well I get 10 yards and I hook my left pedal on a small tree and literally fall over left forearm first on top of one of those FUCKING rocks Josh or Eric put up on its side to create a thin, sharp edge at the top....

I got WORKED tonight. I literally just rode the trail back out to the berm by Rawk Garten, took DT down to BCRT and eased back home, tail tucked. Brutal.

    1. Oh, and BTW, Mr. Bones looks pretty ominous when you're approaching it at night. Sweet addition. Very F'd up looking...."is that a deer....a person....wtf is that...oh shit, I better ride right now"

  8. Ha! I love it. I never posted up about it but on my rode the other day when I ran into Mike I too had an adventure where Deception took ahold of my dingle and dragged it into the dirt asking with my pride. Was having a great ride! Was super pumped and had made every feature without a dap or pedal strike even with the exception of my horrible start up after talking with Mike, this build up of confidence made me get a little lax and was jamming out to some NSYNC a little to hard when I approach the Grotto go to power stroke off it when my headphones snag a tree I came to close to on left. And of course my headphones are secured nicely under my helmet straps . This combo of events proceded to rip my head back left once released I found my self offline and doing a semi controlled endo down the Grotto in slow mo time until I reach the bottom front tire washes out and I abruptly end IP on my back laying in the craddle of the Grotto tangled in my bike , rock and the tree at bottom. I proceded to rip my helmet off and lay there contemplating life and trying to absorb what just happened. Well from there my confidence was shook but I jammed on going hard to the paint. Performing well still I climb EBD determined to nail it first try without a pussy break on last approach turn. I make it up EBD with only a simple stand on the pedal to make the bike move fwd and what happens? My leg got the worst lockout leg cramp I've had in awhile. This forces me to fall slowly to the left letting out a Chewbaca like cry. Damn thing won't let up so,only thing I could do was forcibly put my foot on the pedal and keep moving. This keeps it at bay but also triggers a series of leg cramps left and right for the rest of the ride. I was useless on every feature in UFL and LFL. Determined to make my pre set 30 mile marker I head down to the Y and mess around before taking BCRT back out. As a bonus in making my manliness look even better as I stopped to get a refill in water under Parmer there happened to be a nice looking girl also getting water and as I unclip and step off bike both Legs lockout cramp from hip flexors to knee caps forcing another Chewbaca like cry. She looked at me and I knew she had to be thinking I was such a pussy if this concrete trail kicked my ass. I just hung my head hobbled to the bucket and waited for her to leave before I let out a tear. Rest of ride home was focused solely on not stopping and peddling through every cramp that came my way. Got home had my wife help me set up the dreaded but crucial ice immersion bath. All was good the next day. I love Deception! And The Picnic

    1. Hahaha, brutality son. As I was going down Grotto last night I was trying to picture your mishap. That's a sketchy place to be going over the bars and whatnot. Couple of big rocks you could knock yourself out cold on.

  9. Nice. Glad I am not the only one that pulled up with insane leg cramps on EBD.

I flagged and cut some of Barn. It can be completed in no time at all. It will flow from the highest little path off that single track spur right after the tracks and composite bridge - literally just feet away from the cul de sac. It will slope down, swoop around a HUGE oak and swoop again thru cedars to another nice little downhill before it get to the Barn area. For now we'll just put the trail literally thru the remaining barn structure - there is a big cut to be made just on the other side and some old metal roofing and such to be picked up. Man, I wish we could man-handle that old water well windmill and make it clearly visible - it's friggin awesome.

Y'day I cleared EBD but just by the hair of my chin. I'm not proud about this as I planned it - I bitch ringed a few of the "climbs" in the Hollows and Bonus in prep for EBD and bitch up EBD until the little "rest area" where I put the chain on the big (middle) ring up front. Not very manly of me, but that bitch ring kept me from lighting the fire in my thighs enough to get me up EBD.

I did 3 laps at Picnic, hitting Basket twice and going the easy way once - just because. Also did the easy way on Big Ravine once just because and to have it on The Stravas.

On D I passed hikers, an off-road tri chick, SEVERAL riders. I actually smoked Matt Barkley just before Big Flats and he never caught up! Riding with his 11 yo son might have something to do with that, but not likely. Ran into a guy who was clearly hating life in the bonus, then again I was below Chunk in UFL and I heard him bitching and I know he had just walked up EBD. Ran into a guy from mojo that had senting me raging PMs about illegal trails - got nothing but respect and praise from the guy this day though.

My ride at the Y and back on the BCRT and Pasture were uneventful.

Mike - the benching work in Ravine Drop and Hollow is perfect, but I missed where you put the escalator for Testy...

    1. I love reading ride reports. they typically involve some good stuff. I especially like hearing about people hating life out there.

last night I actually felt like I was on an escalator for testy, no hard breathing, no nothing, but it all ended badly so it doesn't count. thanks fire the feedback on ravine drop. I thought it rode nicely but was curious what you guys thought...if it needed more or anything.

im gonna get big E out in the trunk soon.

and nice work on clearing ebd. in my opinion there is no shame in grannying up the first part to increase success on the feature. then it's on to recovery ridge where you can pick your speed back up. much better than over exerting, missing the feature and having to reset.

as I hit Dare last night I was thinking how badly it would suck for brakes to catastrophically fail at that moment

  10. I forgot to add that I added a bit of "help" to spare my chainrings on that big slanted log after The Basket drop. you still have to lift the back wheel up onto the log to avoid chainring smash so it doesn't totally dumb it down. I used a few rocks, some driftwood and the front wheel from an actual big wheel I found in the creek area. again those who get lazy will still nail their rings time will tell if it lasts..

  11. I had an awesome ride last night, but my friend who has not been on his bike since Oct was not so fortunate. It all started on picnic when his bigring got caught up on the log over the trail; let’s just say it was an unsuccessful bunny hop resulting in an endo. My bash guard grazed the log but I managed to clear it without incident. The rest of picnic was flowtastic. We then hit Deception He was clearly not prepared for this because I heard a continual slew of profanity after many of the rock ledge climbs and big kickers. Not sure if he will be riding again soon we had to bail out near satellite, due to his frustaion and fatigue. What are ya’ll doing for fuel/ calories during your ride? I eat all natural fruit strips from Costco or cliff blocks every 30-60 mins helps prevent bonking, cramping, and helps keep your head in the game

    1. Generally if a ride is less than 2 hours I try to rely on pre-ride fuel. If I am feeling hungry I'll try to have a clif bar or in a pinch a snickers. When it gets hotter I am usually more diligent about have a Hammer Gel every 45 mins. When it's really hot I use NUUN in the camelbak on 3+ hour rides and sometimes carry protein powder.

All that said, often I am not fueling adequately.

    2. Haven't put nuun in the Osprey yet does it clean out well? You have to fuel the machine man!! As for myself I see a noticeable difference when fueled properly.

    3. NUUN is no problem at all, rinses out just like water. Contains zero sugar which is the only reason other drinks funk up bladders. I generally don't leave leftovers in the bladder like I do with water though, however, I have and it still did not funk or stick at all.

NUUN is very 'light', I can't drink gatorade while running or riding - heartburn, plus is jacks up the water bladder.

Absolutely agree, just typically neglect it on the shorter rides. It's no fun to bonk.

    4. I make homemade Tequilla Energy shots. Tons of caffeine, b vitamins and off course Tequila. I know im a freaking genius. I also carry strips of bacon and tots in my pockets.

  12. I almost exclusively rely on pre ride meals. if no time then I bring trail mix and eat on ride to trail head. sometimes a stinger waffle for backup (if I haven't eaten them all while sitting around the house.
