Holy shizzer that last section is truly a lung and leg burner. Some real work will be required to ride that especially if tired. Well it is cut and treaded to the top of "Eric is a bag of dicks" . Someone had already ninja chopped that rotten tree off the trail so i just finished up the cutting and ground work to the top. I chipped away a little at the rock shelf in that ravine hopefully it is a little more roll friendly now. I shuttled all the tools to the top except one McLeod. I left it in the mini vortex because i think it might need a little work to make it more flow friendly. Not sure though it needs to be rode a few times and see how it feels. I didn't have my bike i ran in today.
So, flagging is ready to be continued. I have no idea what the plan is so Eric if you have a half ass map cool otherwise I am fairly sure Mike you know what the goal is. Also on my run in I was really looking for the areas you guys are thinking might need to be re- routed in future. Call me un- observant but I really didn't see anything that was all that serious. Inform me. The only spot I really would like to do a quick re-route on would be that unnecessary sharp U- turn around that cedar tree that everyone skids on.(forget what section that is in off top of head.) It really takes away from the flow and potential speed you can get in that section. So if you guys are cool with that I might work on that soon. Let me know.
Next day i can get out might be Friday.
Deception is a 100% rider designed and built trail. The trail is in the process of becoming an official trail of the Williamson County Parks and Rec and is an Austin Ridge Rider supported trail. The designers and builders will continue to be the primary trail stewards and are official volunteers for Wilco and Trail Stewards for ARR. Deception is NOT Walnut Creek and it's not meant to be EASY - do not modify the trail, elevate YOUR skills.

Awesome work man! "Eric is a bag of dicks"....hahahahaha!
ReplyDeleteI can be out there in the AM Friday Josh. I say we get out there and flag hard. 'Twould be nice to get some more distance laid out. It'll be a good time to be walking around in there close to the houses as well.
I'm pumped about checking out that newest climb. Should be sweet. We can also work that rock shelf to get it smooth.
As far as that one turn you're talking about. Eric and I had planned to reroute it with a bit of an S turn into the little rock hit by the tree. That tree needs to be trimmed a little anyways. The only other option I thought might work would be to give that cedar on the tight turn a HUGE hair cut (remove the right side of it so a person can lean into that turn with a small berm. I think that would be cool if we just do the work. But we can discuss. I'm open to whatever.
As far as the other spot for reroute...one spot was just after the cradle (going in) and just below Snot Rock where the dirt is super loose. The steepness of the hill is causing people to skid and loosen it up further. I'm pretty sure the other day when you and I rode out together, you made it up the hill without a problem, and I typically do as well. I don't think it absolutely has to be rerouted at this point, so I'm good leaving it for now. If it gets all washed out and unrideable, then we can address it.
Let's try to hook up Friday around 10am and get some flagging done..and maybe a little cutting along "Chunky" (the rock ridge up at the top off to the right.
It's in the books. I will see you there.
ReplyDeletewell i made it to the end, climb is not that bad, but i dont know how i will get up that rock ledge, saw another rider he made it also,
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to that rock ledge. Now you got me worried, Marty.
DeleteWe need to figure out a way, if possible, to block off that little connector trail from the regional trail to our trail down close to that bridge on the regional trail. Although, maybe that's wishful thinking.
Haha, I like it. I recall forewarning Mike that the climb after the awesome flow would be pure punishment. We really don't have any climbs before this, even going back up to the Cradle and then up the Ravine isn't that bad, short, steeps, but nothing sustained. The next few miles will change this dramatically. There will be plenty flowy downs with several very punishing and long climbs.
ReplyDeleteAs for the next bits, Mike and I walked off pretty much the area of the next main line, after that, it'll be some diagonal back and forth ending with a climb to the Hump. Then the plan is documented to start the Vortex top to bottom with a LONG run along the ridge that runs parallel to the BCRT.
I should be able to start coming out and scouting/flagging in a few more weeks. I just need my shoulder a little more mobile and durable before then. Sutures were removed today, but steri-strips are in places for another week - I have torn open incisions at this point before and don't plan to do that this time around, plus I am not supposed to sweat until the steri-strips fall off (I'll at least hit the trainer on the roadie in the garage then). Maybe starting Xmas week I can come out and scout flag, but it will be after Jan 16th before I am really out there putting in any effort.
Awesome work guys!
As for Speed Killer (aka My 25mph Downhill Killed by a sharp ass turn) - My long-term vision (and it WILL happen) is to straighten it out and have a ladder go right thru the middle of the large cedar to the left of the rock notches. We can keep the existing line, we will need it going up and it will be the bitch line down. I was thinking it would be a roller, but F that, it will be a GAP on the way down - the bitch line down (and main line up) will serve as the gap.
ReplyDeleteIn the meantime feel free to give it the haircut and berm suggested.
You keep talking like that and I'm liable to go buy a big squishy bomber bike, chest protector, shin guards, and flat pedals. THEN I'll be ready to ride Walnut.
DeleteI saw that guy on the brushy sidewalk "trail"
DeleteSo, did Carlos actually leave a donation with the stash? Anyone ever dig thru the buckets to see?
ReplyDeleteWill check tomorrow. I hadn't seen anything as of the last time I was out there, and I checked. It's been a while though.
DeleteAs you know, Carlos did leave a $20 bill out there. Carlos, if you're reading this, thanks a TON for doing that. Today, Josh and I enjoyed the new saw it purchased. Cutting like butter.
DeleteWe got a line cut headed out (stuff was THICK) from the top of "Eric is a bag of dicks" and got to the turn where we head into "The Chunk". Should be a pretty sweet bit up there in the "high elevations".
Anyways, gonna keep hashing out some sick stuff as we are able.
