Trails and Errors - crash and fail on the trail

No idea how crappy this will look once it's done rendering on the Youtubes, but regardless I demand that you Like (Thumb Up), rate and comment!

Note: As of the posting it's still rendering, if it will not play, try again later.

Josh, I will put together the cool stuff too, but clearly this was the priority...

  1. Ok, so you're typically trying to ride up truth or dare as well as down? I'm not sure I'm into that. I'm always glad to just get up that climb and into the Chunk again on the way out.

    Nice footage, players.

After seeing that, the jury's still WAY out on that turn before logjam. I saw a dozen attempts and one successful completion. In all fairness, I haven't ridden it from below LJ, so that remains to be seen.

    Nice make on EBD, Josh.

  2. Truth is the easy route, Dare is the hard way. Not sure how doable it is going up, but it's tryable.

No, jury is not still out. What you saw was a progression of the trail and many attempts during the progression. The turn is very different from when you where there. Josh made it twice, I missed it the first time he did it. He's a novice, so the turn is in. If you want to create a pussy route, have at it, but it should not alter this route. The effort put into that turn and Log Jam equates to about 15 hours, you'll have to pry that turn out of my cold dead hand to take it away. It can still be tweaked to make it easier, but I don't think it's necessary. C'mon, not everything should be rideable by everyone on every attempt - we all agree on that.

  3. FYI I cut that top of that turn down by at least a foot, so that's a foot less elevation there alone. Also, forget about having a lip to hit going down, now you have another 18 inches of tread to swing wide. If you saw the work we did on that thing you'd know how insulting it is to say the jury's out... I'm done whining.

    1. Fair enough, but I'd rather maintain a healthy skepticism that leads to debate and produces a great product than sit there and pretend to agree on everything. No reason to get all butthurt. Believe me, I know the effort that is going into that section. But this is the push and pull that has made the trail as great as it is. You with the tight ass tech, and me trying to maintain open flow. If you recall, we started out with flow as a goal for this piece, and now we're teching the balls out of it. I'm just asking for a melding of the two I guess, and to be fair, no I haven't seen this latest iteration.

Gotta love those slow mo falls. I've crashed a lot lately. This trail's kicking my ass, but I'm loving every minute of it. On the shoe note, I HATED spending money on new shoes, but man was it nice the other day when I finally put the cleats on them and rode.

Long live this stupid fucking trail.

    2. I agree on the flow issue it's no secret I love the XC speed stuff too and really want to turn across D track into that. Eric and I looked at a possible second line lower of the current turn it could be made to loop out farther and gradually come up. I think it could maybe be useful. Just don't want to get rid of that line. Not because I watched Eric work til he almost passed out on it but because it is challenging and improved skillz.

    3. Not to get all Toa on you, but I'm on the same page, Mike. I tell everyone that our Yin and Yang are what have made this trail so varied and awesome (and then there is Josh's muscle). In general I think the whole trail is flow. The reality is I can talk about flow on paper, but in the field we have to to deal with the terrain. I think we all agreed to milk every last sweet drippy drop of colostrum from this bitch. We have always built to features that we want to ride.

I think you'll like the latest iteration of the turn and with the soaking we got it should pack in like concrete, so swinging wide should be cake.

      Yes, viva la trail!

  4. It was the progression of trail altering. He Mc Destroyed that earth while I watched and was test dummy. I am peeing blood after that slow mo fall, I love it. That turn was even completed by me a rook on no run up speed and loose dirt. It was a gratifying accomplishment for me and I look fwd to riding it as it settles. Yes I attempted to ride UP dare. Not something I would do a lot but I got halfway real easy with my Scott road bike and whimpy 26 in wheels. And yes EBD still get me but a few more rides and I will have it down. Fatigue isn't the issue on first attempt during ride it is just timing and inexperience and tech riding. But I love this shit. Anyways., I thought my shoe was broken and Eric told me pearl has lifetime on them but they aren't so now I have to hope they do brake cause I want, new shoes and im poor. I might make it out tomorrow.

    1. so at 1:50 that turn is the one coming down from truth or dare? if so thats the one you though would need more benching. looks like it does. I'll hit that next time I'm out.

    2. PI Lifetime Warranty - just send them in.
I've replaced 2 pair of shoes and got a free pair of shorts since they no longer had the high end shoe and I didn't want the new "version of it", so I got the mid shoe and a pair of $90 shorts. I am about to send said shorts back (2nd time), cause the ass ripped out (again). My buddy Nixon is shameless and sends worn out socks and gloves too.

    1. at the bottom of that turn I dont think I got the bench aggressive enough b/c even when you carve the berm up top it's hard to hold a firm line all the way through the turn. gets sketchy down thurrrrrrr

    2. Yea, I think it could be excavated a tad more throughout, but really packing it with this rain might just take care of it.

  6. Jeremy might be watching and chime in, Hunter too...
They rode and witnessed some of it. Hunter was Mr Trackstand going down it.

Jeremy is planning to meet me out there Sunday to cut up LFL.

    1. I tried the turn after LJ 3 times and failed even after watching Josh make it. But then I also dabbed a couple of the turns above on my way out. For me it would be doable if the bank was firm so i could go a bit wider.

I'm piking up a couple of hand saws for the cause and will see you Sunday morning.

  7. Looking fwd to working with you out there Sunday.

Josh and I went out for a short bit today, but I think we accomplished quite a bit. we did more maintenance and fine tuning work, we did not progress on new tread or cutting.

    1. Big Cedar Berm - it's moved back a bit, dug out a little more, and more curved - it started out curved, but there was an obvious flat spot - I think we fixed it.
    2. Approach to the turn right above Log Jam turn was benched significantly more, maker the trail wider for 2 reasons - avoid riders blowing scree down onto the LJ turn and to make a smoother and faster approach to the rooty climb. Adding a retaining wall too.
    3. Turn right before said rooty climb - dug it out a bit, making a smoother, faster, wider turn. Josh also blocked off the right side of the trail - it was pointless.
    4. Rooty Climb - Josh cleaned it up quite a bit clearing scree, smoothing, and superfluous embedded rock and root removal.
    5. Tight approach to the LJ turn - widened, smoothed and benched more thoroughly - again, this should make for a more flowy approach and exit to the LJ turn. Retaining wall added to stop scree from above.
    6. LJ Turn - the "rain" did fuck all to help us, but we tried to pack it in as best we could**
    7. LJ - see above, we tried to pack it in**

The plan today was just to rework some iffy areas to increase the flowability, I think we did what we intended to do, but there's always room for more improvement. I think we should plan on transplanting some of the primo soil beyond LJ up to Big Cedar - I'll bring and extra 5 gal bucket out.

** Sunday I will bring out my 5 gal sprayer full of water. If someone can meet me up on Staked Plains at the top of DT to help me, I will also bring a bigass gatorade cooler for a refill. My broken ass can't be lugging around 90lbs of water.
